Winter Driving in Romania – Essential Guide with a Rental Car
Winter Driving in Romania – Essential Guide with a Rental Car
Planning to visit Romania between November and March? Driving here in winter is magical – snow-covered castles, frozen lakes, and empty mountain roads – but it requires preparation. Here is everything you need to know about winter driving in Romania with a rental car.
Are Rental Cars Equipped for Romanian Winter?
At EziRent, yes. All our vehicles are equipped with winter tires from November 1 to March 31, as required by Romanian law. Winter tires provide essential grip on snow and ice, especially on mountain roads like the Transfagarasan (closed in winter) or Transalpina (also closed).
Essential Winter Driving Kit
When you rent from EziRent, the car comes with:
- Winter tires (by law)
- Snow chains available on request (for mountain passes)
- Ice scraper and snow brush
- Full CASCO insurance (covers winter-related damage)
Winter Road Conditions in Romania
Motorways (A1, A2, A3): Generally well-maintained. Snowplows clear priority routes quickly. But black ice is common in early mornings – drive cautiously.
National Roads (DN1, DN7, etc.): Cleared regularly but may have packed snow in rural sections. The DN1 through the Prahova Valley (Brasov to Bucharest) is notoriously congested in winter.
Mountain Roads: Many mountain passes close completely from November to May:
- Transfagarasan (DN7C): Closed approximately November – June
- Transalpina (DN67C): Closed approximately November – May
- Transrarau (DJ175A): Closed approximately November – April
Check road status at http://www.cnadnr.ro/ro/starea-drumurilor before heading into the mountains.
City Driving: Sibiu, Cluj, and Brasov have good snow clearing. Alba Iulia and Sebes are small and easy to navigate. Parking may be restricted during heavy snowfall for plowing.
Recommended Cars for Winter Driving
For city and motorway driving: Economy cars with winter tires handle fine. Renault Clio, Dacia Sandero Stepway, VW Polo.
For mountain and rural roads: SUVs offer better ground clearance and stability. Dacia Duster 4×4, Ford Kuga 4×4, VW Tiguan.
For maximum confidence: The Duster 4×4 with winter tires is our most popular winter rental. It handles unplowed village roads, ski resort access roads, and icy conditions with ease.
Winter Driving Tips for Romania
- Check the battery – cold starts drain batteries. All EziRent cars are maintained, but avoid leaving lights on when parked.
- Keep fuel above half tank – in remote areas, gas stations may be 30+ km apart. Fuel condensation also becomes an issue with near-empty tanks in extreme cold.
- Drive smoothly – no sudden acceleration, braking, or steering. Gentle inputs keep traction.
- Know how to handle skids – if the rear slides, steer gently into the skid. If the front slides (understeer), ease off the accelerator.
- Watch for horse-drawn carts – yes, even in winter, especially in Maramures and rural Transylvania. They are unlit and hard to spot in snow.
- Carry cash – many rural gas stations and shops don’t accept cards. Romanian Lei is essential outside cities.
- Download offline maps – mobile signal can drop in mountain areas. Google Maps offline mode is your friend.
- Emergency number is 112 – it works everywhere in Romania, in multiple languages.
- Pull over safely and wait it out
- Keep the engine running occasionally for warmth (but check exhaust isn’t blocked by snow)
- Use hazard lights
- Call us at +40 745 414 625 – we can help coordinate recovery if needed
- Balea Lake Ice Hotel (accessible by cable car in winter since the road is closed)
- Poiana Brasov – Romania’s largest ski resort (2.5h from Sibiu)
- Apuseni Mountains – winter hiking, snowshoeing, ski touring
- Maramures – wooden churches under snow = fairy tale
- Sibiu Christmas Market – one of Europe’s most beautiful (late Nov – early Jan)
What If There’s a Snowstorm?
If you get caught in heavy snow:
Romanian snowstorms typically pass within hours. The main roads are rarely closed for more than half a day.
